In many communities, the issue of menstrual health is often shrouded in silence and stigma, leaving countless girls vulnerable and unsupported. Without the crucial support of health clubs, these issues can spiral, affecting education, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
Before the establishment of a health club at Mdyankhanga, many girls experience on menstruation was fraught with confusion and embarrassment.
An interview with one girl states "I felt ashamed to tell anyone about it, we learned about growing up and changes in class that’s the knowledge I had to manage my period."
However, without the health clubs young girls were lacking safe spaces where they could openly discuss their menstrual health, learn about hygiene, and together with young boys unlearn the myths and stigma surrounding menstruation.
All thanks to Think Malawi for the support, it won’t be all rosy for once and for all but gradually as much as more students join the health club, the situation will change.
So far,41 students are registered members of the Umunthu Plus Health Club at Mdyankhanga primary school.
