Febe Mbowani 17, lives with her grandmother in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district and she is a form 3 pupil at Linga Community Day Secondary School.
Being raised by her grandmother in a house without electricity, more often she sleeps without reading class notes because they do not always manage to buy paraffin they use to light up the only lamp they have.
She says Sasha her friend in the neighbourhood who also goes to the same school always tells her to be going together for late night studies at their school but she was discouraged after only going for two days because she felt its uncomfortable to leave her grandmother all alone in the house and as well risky to walk at night.
However, upon introduction of ICT project by UmunthuPlus at the school, Febe was motivated to start taking her studies digitally through the radio class session called ‘Digital Education Corner’ and leveraging on the computer lab to take on studies during her free time.
‘It’s always vice-versa when am in the morning shift that means am free in the afternoon and what interest me most is that I don’t easily get tired surfing the internet unlike when studying hardcopy notes I sleep and, every Wednesday I also take on radio class session with my collegue here through the solar powered radio.’she said
Febe also compliments that her outstanding performance during the inter zoom school quiz competition can be attributed to her study plan of late as she answered all the questions correctly.
‘It was not that easy because all the six key subjects were included and we just had to be ready that as long as it’s from the books somebody will answer it correct and am glad our school came out to be the best top performing school among Lozi and Nkhotakota secondary schools though for some of us thought we were never ready to attempt all question correctly.’ she said
Febe was awarded two hardcovers,a pencil, two pens,an instrument and a calculator together with fellow contestant of the inter zoom quiz competition school mates at Linga.
The ICT Project targets three secondary schools in Nkhotakota;Lozi,Linga and Nkhotakota and,was being implemented by UmunthuPlus with funding from Think Malawi.
